Outcomes of Workshop
This workshop will enable you to:
- Understand how to teach phonics using the Balanced Language Approach
- Differentiate between phonemic awareness and phonics
- Interact with the entire class using practical phonemic awareness activities
- Understand that phonemic awareness and phonics can be taught together
- Understand that phonics is progressive across the Foundation Phase and within a grade
- Compare the phonic requirements per grade in the Foundation Phase as stipulated in CAPS
- Translate the required phonics into CAPS-linked activities for Grades 1-3
- Understand the phonetic vocabulary that is taught in Grade 3
- Know the differences between consonant digraphs, vowel digraphs and vowel and consonant blends
- Differentiate between the different phonemic awareness skills during an assessment task
- Assess phonics using the Balanced Language Approach
- Differentiate between beginner, intermediate and advanced phonics activities
