The natural sciences curriculum aims to provide learners with opportunities to examine and
investigate ideas they have about nature so that they make sense. It also encourages learners
to ask questions that could lead to further research and investigation.
There are three specific aims in natural sciences and technology:
• Specific aim 1: ‘Doing science and technology’
Learners should be able to complete investigations, analyse problems and use practical
processes and skills when designing and evaluating solutions.
• Specific aim 2: ‘Understanding and connecting ideas’
Learners should have a grasp of scientific, technological and environmental knowledge,
and should be able to apply this knowledge in new contexts.
• Specific aim 3: ‘Science, technology and society’
Learners should understand the practical uses of natural sciences and technology in
society and the environment, and develop values that make them caring and creative
citizens.
The Intermediate Phase Step into Science Resource Book for Practical Activities covers
the practical work for the natural sciences part of the CAPS for Intermediate Phase Natural
Sciences and Technology Grades 4–6.
The aim of the book is to instil the scientific method in learners and to develop major
scientific process skills. These process skills are developed through carefully planned
activities and worksheets.
